aspidistrafly is the sound, visual & music project formed by April Lee (b.1984) and Ricks Ang (b.1980). April is an art director, photographer and vocalist. She has a background of study in architecture. Ricks also works in design and curates the burgeoning Kitchen. imprint. He is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and also a music producer.

aspidistrafly's work lies in their interest in finding a sense of time and place in sound, through a meeting place in music between acoustic arrangements, textures, processed musical, field recordings and concepts. Since 2002, aspidistrafly had produced a couple of handmade self-releases, sound/performances for new media installations and art exhibitions, as well as participating in works for independent labels in North America, Japan, Australia among others. They have also performed internationally in Japan and other Asia-pacific regions.

In 2008, they released their first full length album 'i hold a wish for you'. Both April and Ricks are currently residing in Singapore.

Ricks AngとApril Leeによるシンガポーリアン・デュオ。アーティスト名はGeorge Orwellの自伝的小説、"Keep the Aspidistra Flying"から。

日常におけるはかない美しさと移り行く時間に魅せられるaspidistraflyが柔らかなパステルカラーで描き出すドリーミーで幻想的な音世界は、強い郷愁を呼ぶと同時に見事にメランコリック。その録音作品は、漂うようなアコースティックの響き、質感溢れるギター、控えめなエレクトロニクス、フィールド・レコーディング、ヴェルヴェット・ヴォイスのささやきで織り上げられる。

2004年に発表した自主制作CDEP、"The Ghost of Things"が批評家やリスナーの評判を呼び、地元紙The Straits Timesに「注目すべき最も有望なバンドの一つ」と評された。この作品が国内外から注目を集め、2007年に入り、カナダの9.12 Recordsのコンピレーションにアキラ・コセムラらと共に参加、マレーシアのmü-nestレーベルのコンピレーションには、Piana、カズマサ・ハシモト、Lullatoneらと共に名を列ねた。2007年の暮れには、現在制作中のファースト・フルアルバム、"i hold a wish for you"の発表を予定している。2007年5月に行われたPianaシンガポール公演ではフロントアクトを務めた。

写真やインタラクティヴ・アートの分野でも活動し、2007年３月には、国際的に有名なシンガポールのパフォーマンス・カンパニー、TheatreWorksのキュレーションにより、メディア・アーティストの真鍋大度、Dumb Typeのメンバーでもあるライティング・アーティストの藤本隆行らとのコラボレーション・パフォーマンス、"Drift Net"が実現、aspidistraflyは音と映像を担当し、高い評価を受けた。

二人は自主レーベルの名前でもあるKitchen.名義のデザイン・ユニットとしても活動し、aspidistraflyのCDは、二人の写真作品がちりばめられたユニークなアコーディオン式のフォトブックに収められている。
